The Serious Fire Safety Implications of Counterfeit Cables Installed in Building Network Infrastructure

Speaker Bio: Dave Kiddoo, Executive Director, Communications Cable & Connectivity Association (Washington DC, USA)

Abstract: The proliferation of counterfeit structure cabling and connectivity components has created the potential for catastrophic fire safety and critical performance consequences in building network infrastructure. Video images of full-scale fire tests performed at UL will be shown. Adhering to NFPA 70 NEC® Code requirements and inspections of compliance on each and every installation are critical, now more than ever. This presentation will provide an understanding of the Fire Safety requirements for installed Communications / Network cables in commercial buildings. With the added use of communications cable to provide power to devices on the network, necessary precautions and actions are described that Contractors, Installers, Users, AHJ’s and Inspectors can use to assure that they are installing compliant, safe and performing network infrastructure.
