Limited Combustible Foamable Fluoropolymers for LAN Cabling, Enabling High Operating Temperatures for Power over Ethernet

Speaker Bio: Charles Glew, Engineering Manager, Cable Components Group (Connecticut, USA)

Abstract: This paper addresses the evolving global need for specialty foam materials that lower the combustible footprint for smoke generation and flame spread while providing a low dielectric constant, and the thermal stability to simultaneously transfer 10 gigabits of data while safely providing 1 Amp of power.

In summary, we will discuss the benefits of foamed fluoropolymers for use in all aspects of communications cabling from insulation to crossweb to jacketing, while pointing out the conundrum of an all-halogen free cable design when both dielectric constant and high thermal stability are required in Power over Local Area Network (LAN/POE) cables.
