Development of a New Jacket Material for Fiber Optic Mini and Microcables

Speaker Bio: Dr. Theo Geussens, Global Application Technology Leader, Dow Wire & Cable (Horgen, Switzerland)

Abstract: Jackets for fiber optic mini- and microcables require a dedicated compound which needs to exhibit low shrinkage, easy processing, high stiffness and low coefficient of friction (COF). This paper describes the product attributes of a new HDPE compound offering an optimal balance of these properties. In particular, the rheological behaviour (low viscosity and short relaxation times) optimizes the shrinkage performance; an optimal density / Environmental Stress Crack resistance (ESCR) performance gives excellent cable blowing performance and protection.

A special version was also developed with laser printing capability; the laser marking performance is discussed in this paper.
